how far would you go to promote your website?

Hi all,
Just got one of those news updates from the disabledfriends website, which I joined a few weeks back, and it just got me thinking, how far do people have the right to tell others what to do outside their website. They stated, that they would appreciate it if people would stop taking other people off the site and on to msn messenger, yahoo messenger, or whatever the current im client happens to be. They said that defeats the whole purpose of the site, and if it continues, they might have to examine their policy about keeping the community talk rooms free. Well, as far as I can see, the site is so dead right now, I can't see them getting very much at all if they charged for the talk rooms. In my mind, telling people not to advertise other sites while they're on their site, or not to take your friends over to msn messenger or aim is a bit dominating in nature, and dictating to people outside the site. On for the people for instance, they take a very dim view of people even mentioning other chat programs or sites while on their site. The vipconduit site however, in their items of interest page, have a list of the current chat sites, including for the people. As I say, forbiding people to talk about other chat sites or programs on a site is ridiculous. If people want to pull a plug for their site, they will do it via email, or the im clients. I'm probably totally alone in this view, but in my opinion, the best way to promote a site is through courtesy and respect, and friendliness, rather than using prizes, the promise of money, or continuous events. I can't get on vipconduit.com even to check it out. I can go on the site, read the news link, and log in to see who is on the site, but I can't use the rooms, because ventrilo 2.2 won't work with my 98. Anyway, I suppose when any site starts getting large, things change for the worst in some respects. Just my thoughts for the evening,

That is interesting. I just hope the zone doesn't start doing that.

I don't think The Zone has to worry about that. What does disabledfriends offer besides chat rooms?

well, they have message boards, which are pretty dead right now, but they have boards mostly on disabilities, though none for the blind. There a few on art, and disabilities such as cp, fybromialgy, and a bunch of other disabilities I've never ever heard of, and they do have a board for people to introduce themselves, they call it, what's your story, but I only got a response from 2 admins. They say since their site is only 4 months old, they're a babe in the woods. On the one hand, if people haven't heard of the site, it wouldn't grow by leaps and bounds, but on the other hand, for a while, it looked like there were some people posting on the boards, but they seemed to have stopped. There is a book review board, but only 2 messages on it. Most of the boards just don't apply to me. If you are a guest, a nonpaying member, you can only send 3 emails a day, view 2 profiles a day, play 2 games a day. They do have games, but you only get to play more if you pay. I'm not sure their games are accessible with screen readers. That may be enough info for now, if anyone wants to know more, let me know.
